2018 Scholarship Program

LANCASTER, CA (December 5, 2017) – The Los Angeles County Air Show presented by Lockheed Martin announces the STEM Scholarship Program that will recognize and reward a minimum of three students with scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each.

To be eligible for the Los Angeles County Air Show STEM Scholarship, applicants must be entering college for the first time in the Fall of 2018 and plan to pursue college/university level studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM), or Aerospace. Applicants must be U.S. citizens who reside in the Antelope Valley region and maintain credits to graduate high school at the Spring semester of 2018 and start collegiate level coursework in the Fall of 2018.

The Los Angeles County Airshow is considered to be one of the nation’s premier Air Shows scheduled for Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25, 2018. The Air Show will also have a full line-up of world renowned aerobatic performers from all over the country, skydivers and warbirds. In addition to the attractions in the sky, the Los Angeles County Air Show is home to an impressive, interactive STEM exhibition, believed to be one of the largest expos of any air show, extensive static displays, an iconic Aeronautical Historical Panel “Heroes and Legends” and more.

Application Process: Step by Step

Applying for the scholarship is straightforward, but it requires careful attention to detail. Students must complete an online application form, which includes personal information, academic history, and a statement of career goals. In addition, applicants are asked to submit:

  • A current high school transcript demonstrating strong academic performance, particularly in math and science courses.
  • Two letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, or community leaders who can speak to the applicant's character and potential in STEM fields.
  • A personal essay (500-750 words) describing the applicant's interest in STEM, any relevant projects or experiences, and how the scholarship would help achieve their educational and career aspirations.

All materials must be submitted by the deadline—12 a.m. Sunday, January 14, 2018. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. It is strongly recommended that applicants review all requirements carefully and allow ample time for recommenders to submit their letters.

Selection Criteria and Review Committee

A panel of educators, industry professionals, and community leaders will review all applications. The committee evaluates each candidate based on academic achievement, demonstrated interest in STEM, quality of the personal essay, strength of recommendations, and involvement in extracurricular activities related to science or technology. Financial need may also be considered, though it is not the sole determining factor.

The selection process is competitive, reflecting the high caliber of students in the Antelope Valley. The committee seeks individuals who not only excel academically but also exhibit curiosity, perseverance, and a genuine passion for making a difference through STEM. Finalists may be interviewed (in person or virtually) before the final awards are announced.

Recipients of the Los Angeles County Air Show STEM Scholarship will be honored during the 2018 Air Show, scheduled for March 24-25.
