Los Angeles County Air Show Announces 2020 Scholarship Program

Lancaster, Calif. – (November 22, 2019) – The Los Angeles County Air Show “Aerospace Valley, USA™” presented by Lockheed Martin is now accepting applications for the prestigious STEM Scholarship Program. The LACAS STEM Scholarship program will recognize and reward at least three qualified students with scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each.

To be eligible for the Los Angeles County Air Show STEM Scholarship, applicants must be entering college for the first time in the Fall of 2020, and plan to pursue college/university level studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM), or Aerospace. Applicants must be U.S. citizens who reside in the Antelope Valley region and maintain credits to graduate high school in the spring semester of 2020 and start college level coursework in the Fall of 2020.

Criteria and information can be found at www.lacountyairshow.com under the “Scholarships” link. Applications will be accepted until 12 a.m., Sunday, January 12, 2020. Successful applicants will be notified of selection by February 7, 2020. Recipients will be recognized at the 2020 Air Show.

The Los Angeles County Airshow, one of the nation’s premier air shows, will take place on Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 22, 2020. Headlining the 2020 airshow will be the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels. Additional performances will include a full line-up of world-renowned aerobatic pilots from all over the country, skydivers and warbirds. In addition to the attractions in the sky, the Los Angeles County Air Show is home to an impressive interactive STEM exhibition, one of the largest expos of any air show, extensive static displays, iconic aerospace industry speakers and more.

About the STEM Scholarship Program

The Los Angeles County Air Show STEM Scholarship Program was established to support the next generation of innovators, engineers, and scientists in the Antelope Valley. Eligibility and Application Process

Eligibility requirements for the 2020 STEM Scholarship are designed to identify students who are ready to take the next step in their academic journey. Applicants must be high school seniors who will graduate in the spring of 2020 and enroll in an accredited college or university in the fall of 2020. They must intend to major in a STEM field, including aerospace, engineering, computer science, mathematics, or a related discipline. Additionally, applicants must be U.S. citizens and residents of the Antelope Valley region.

The application process is straightforward but requires careful preparation. Students are encouraged to gather materials that highlight their academic achievements, involvement in STEM-related activities, and personal goals. While specific requirements are listed on the air show website, a strong application typically includes:

  • Official high school transcript demonstrating strong performance in math and science courses.
  • A personal statement describing the applicant’s interest in STEM and career aspirations.
  • Letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, or mentors who can speak to the student’s abilities.
  • Documentation of extracurricular activities, such as robotics clubs, science fairs, or volunteer work.

Applications must be submitted online through the Los Angeles County Air Show website. The deadline for the 2020 scholarship is 12:00 AM on Sunday, January 12, 2020. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. After submission, a selection committee reviews all eligible applications and chooses recipients based on merit and potential.

Selection Criteria and Review Process

The selection committee is composed of educators, industry professionals, and community leaders who are committed to advancing STEM education. The committee evaluates applicants holistically, looking for evidence of academic excellence, curiosity, and a genuine passion for STEM fields. All decisions made by the selection committee are final. Successful applicants will be notified by February 7, 2020, via the contact information provided in their application. Due to the volume of applications, the air show is unable to provide individual feedback to applicants who are not selected.
